Livestock Sector in Orissa is highly livelihood intensive and 80% of its rural house holds own livestock of one species or the other and earn supplementary income for the family. This sector contributes 7.27% of the states net domestic product and therefore development of ARD sector is the sin qua non for the rural prosperity. The Department of Animal Resource Development is implementing programmes for breeding,feeding,management of livestock and poultry on scientific methods. The most one is providing to the livestock of the state.
The dairy and the poultry activities are being accelarated with a view to increasing livestock productivity and generating self employment for the rural youths. There are 540 vety Hospitals/Dispensaries and 2939 Livestock Aid Centres functioning under this department, out of which 130 VDs and 621 LACs are functioning in KBK districts and these veterinary Institutions are providing services to livestocks the major activity under this sector. There are two Livestock Vaccine Production Institutes under this department and are engaged in vaccine production. Similarly there are 8 LBD Farms, 6 goat Farms, 2 Sheep farms,1 pig Farm,8 Poultry Farms,7 fodder Seed Farms and 13 Fodder Demonstration Farms functioning in the state.The NPCBB a Government of India sponsored scheme is strengthening and stream-lining the crossbreeding activities in the state and ASCAD and NPRE schemes are taking care of disease control measures.
Government of Orissa in FARD department has formulated the Livestock sector Policy during the year 2002-03 to use the Livestock sector as an instrument for socio and economic development of the rural population of Orissa enabling steady growth of living standard.
